An Evening with Wolfgang Staehle

Wolfgang Staehle (New York / Berlin), internet-art pioneer and founder of THE THING, presents work he made during the ambient.vista residency.

Imperial Gas Works is a recent piece in what one could call a series of ‘vedute’, which is a genre of landscape painting that’s been around since the early 17th century. Technically speaking it’s not painting, of course; it’s rather some sort of chrono-photography. A static camera takes a picture every couple of seconds with intervals usually in the 5 to 10 seconds range.
Because they looked so much like today’s post cards, vedute paintings were sometimes considered a minor genre, but I think there is something quite metaphysical about showing the world just like it is. For me the most exciting thing is everyday reality, the fact that it occurs at all.”
