Floating Objects

For this temporary installation, Floating Objects, artist and architect Catherine Vieira presents a series of architectural sequences. The intention is to extend the perception of the canal scenery with light architectural elements such as balloons, constructing an ephemeral commons inspired by the Japanese Floating World, Ukiyo.

A choregraphy of moving objects will punctuate the waters limits, exploring it’s three states - liquid, solid and vapor.  The installation takes the form of an experimental performance focusing on the production process itself rather than a finished form.  The fluid substance of water is the initial formal note, this horizontal direction transforms into geometrical solids floating like ice. At the edge of the water vaporised drops condense and float in a vertical direction.  The duration of the installation, (5 hours), predetermines a rythym for the project.  Other aspects of the choregraphy will be affected and shaped by the environment, the weather and the audience. The choregraphy will be performed like a liquid substance that continually deforms in adaptive appropriation of the surroundings.

Floating Objects is a part of the London Festival of Architecture 2010.
